When not to massage your baby If any of the following apply to your baby, you should not perform baby massage –
Your baby is under 6 weeks and not received their 6-week health check by a health visitor or professional healthcare practitioner unless written permission has been given.
They are unwell, have a cold or are crying
They have a fever/temperature
They have sickness and/or diarrhoea
They have a soft tissue injury or fracture of any kind
They are undergoing specialist treatment (unless written permission has been given)
They have any swelling, large bruised areas or open sores
They have had their immunisations less than a week before. They can still attend but be mindful of any reactions they might have from the injection especially a fever. Sore areas where they have been injected should be avoided. If you are not sure about performing after immunisations, avoid or if attending the course, still come along and watch the others, have a cuppa and receive the hand out to follow at home. Never force your baby to have a massage.
If you have any concerns, please check with your health visitor or a healthcare professional beforehand.
